There’s a popular myth that David Bowie has disowned Labyrinth and never talks about it, when that really isn’t the truth. It isn’t brought up much mainly because he’s known as a musician rather than an actor, and few interviews with him post-1986 have focused on his acting roles. To demonstrate that, I thought I’d post this video of a ‘Live By Request’ show from 2002 along with a transcript of a charming (if slightly awkward) conversation Bowie has with a fan who discovered him through Labyrinth as a child.
I expect many of us would say similar things to Bowie if we were to encounter him, so know you know how he’d respond!
Romina: I’ve been a great fan of yours ever since I was five years old and ever since Labyrinth came out here [Argentina] I’m only twenty so that’s why.
Bowie: Thank you very much Romina.
Romina: I’ve wanted to marry you ever since Labyrinth came out and I love you, really.
Bowie: Let’s make that a separate phone call, can we? It’s not going to happen, I just want to warn you.
Romina: I know, I know you’re married.
Bowie: You’re very sweet. Did you like Labyrinth?
It seems like Romina didn’t answer (the audience whoops and it seems like she didn’t catch the question) but I think we can safely presume her answer would have been yes!
